First step in navigating this fast-changing technology landscape is know exactly where you are right now. One cannot reach a location, or even find their bearings, until they can locate where they are on the map. This includes knowing each component already installed, how it is wired (or wireless), if it is compatible with newer technology, with what type of wire, and if new wiring is needed, what pathways remain useable. All these things will factor greatly in the cost of your system, and just "going out and getting a couple quotes" will result in a wide spread of guesses. The result? Company's choose the lowest bid and are disappointed to find corners were cut, hastily secured cable (or not at all), panel wiring disasters, and multiple change costly change orders.
